dockBoss+ iPhone 5 Kit Is Here!

ATTN New iPhone 5, iPod Touch, and iPod Nano Users:
This one’s a biggie…

We were curious to see how our dockBoss+ Female USB cable would behave with the new Lightning connector. So, upon receipt of our iPhone 5 yesterday (yup, we wait just like all of you), we hooked it up to a few speaker docks and made quite the discovery: When used with the new Lightning-To-USB cable, the dockBoss+ Female cable allows you to not only charge your iDevice, but also play analog AND digital audio! (See the video above for a visual demo)

Here’s why that’s so huge: The obvious main benefit here is that this allows you to connect your new iPhone or iPod devices to the huge variety of old 30-pin speaker docks and systems currently on the market. If you have a system you love already, or just want to grab a new one on-the-cheap, you won’t have to drop hundreds of dollars when the new Lightning-compatible docking stations come out. There are tons of killer docking stations that have been released over the years, and now your new iPod and iPhone devices can enjoy them just like the old ones did.

So what does all this mean: Basically, if you have a Lightning-To-USB cable (which comes with all new Lightning-compatible iDevices like the iPhone 5), then our dockBoss+ female cable, in combination with a simple audio patch cable, will give you the capability to charge and play audio through ANY 30-pin iPod docking station or system, regardless if it requires digital or analog audio signals!

So if you were hoping to be able to charge and play audio from your new iPhone 5, iPod Touch, or Nano through your favorite old iPod speaker dock or system, we can help! We’ve just put a package together called the dockBoss+ iPhone 5 Kit, which includes a dockBoss+ female cable and an Audio Patch Cable, so you’ll be ready in any situation. And the best part is, it’s available RIGHT NOW! Let us help you get the most out of your new iDevices and your old iPod audio systems!

So the DockBoss+ can work with digital audio and the iPhone 5, but can the dockBoss Air do the same thing?

    Thanks.

    • cablejivezack says:

Thanks for your interest in our products! The dockBoss+ for iPhone 5 can work with some digital audio systems when connected via the lightning cable. The dockBoss air is also perfectly compatible with the iPhone 5, but it does not provide the same requirements for functionality with digital audio systems. These are issues we are currently looking into, in hopes of maximizing system compatibility for future dockBoss releases.

I am using a dockBoss air with my Bose speaker dock and iphone 5. It will start playing but after several minutes will quit even though it shows its still connected. Any thoughts?

    • cablejivezack says:

Our initial batch of dockBoss airs had this issue with certain Bose systems. However, we have resolved this issue with our new version of dockBoss air. Please contact our service team at http://www.cablejive.com/service and we’ll be happy to help get a replacement into your hands.

Will this work in Audi AMI cars?

    • cablejivezack says:

Thank you for your interest in our products. We have had users report issues between other dockBoss cables and certain Audi AMI audio systems, but we have not received any reports of issues with the dockBoss+ iPhone 5 Kit yet. There is a chance that it could work for you.

Regardless, you can return anything you order from us within 60-days from your original date of purchase, so you’re welcome to order one to try and return it if it doesn’t work for you: http://www.cablejive.com/products/dockBossplus-for-iPhone-5.html

have you tried this yet? I have a 2008 Audi A4 and it doesn’t have an AUX, only the old 30pin iPod connector. i tried the basic adapter from Apple and it hasn’t worked.

      • cablejivezack says:

Thanks for your interest in our products. The dockBoss has had some compatibility issues with some of Audi’s digital audio systems, and we’ve had one report of a dockBoss product not working with the 2008 A4, so I’m not positive that it would work for you currently. We will continue to look into this issue, in hopes of finding a solution for a future version of this product. Hopefully our products can help you elsewhere, or in the future.

Is audio lower quality when using analog (headphone jack)?

    • cablejivezack says:

Thank you for your interest in our products. To answer your question, no, when using this adapter the audio is not lower quality when using the headphone jack.

  6. airtas18 says:

The speaker system on the left is a digital system and the Bose Unit is analog system?
What is the benefit of the system on the left being digital? Isn’t all music converted to analog anyway? Just curious? Like If I used an Iphone 4 on both speaker systems is the digital connection better?

    • cablejivezack says:

Please allow me to clarify my original response, and help to address your other questions below:

Normally, say if you were connecting an iPhone 4 or other 30-pin iDevice directly without our product, the B&W system on the left WOULD provide better quality audio, because it would pull the digital signals directly from the 30-pin connection as it should. You will have to talk to B&W about how that signal is then converted to audio specifically, but it is of (at least) a slightly higher quality because it is bypassing the iPhone’s internal Digital to Analog converter (or DAC, which is how iDevices take their digital music files and output Analog audio normally like through your headphones, the Bose dock, etc.).

The Bose SoundDock is analog, but still sounds great. However, because of the fact that the audio has to pass through the iPhone’s internal DAC, you are technically hearing a less “true” sound (the idea being that the iPhone’s internal DAC is of a lower quality than some hi-end DACs you can purchase separately). The amount of difference you’ll really notice personally depends on how big of an audiophile you are I suppose.

Bringing it back to our dockBoss+ for iPhone 5 adapter, I should clarify that this video was literally made the morning that we discovered this worked. Since this video was made, it has been reported to us that this product doesn’t behave this way with ALL digital systems, only some, and for some reason the B&W dock you see there is one of them. This adapter wasn’t intentionally designed to process or work with ALL digital systems, but it does work with some. However, due to the nature of the new 8-pin lightning connector and how it sends audio in general, we aren’t positive if the internal DAC is being avoided or not when it is successfully used with digital systems, and as such we do not feel confident in saying one option for playing audio is of a higher quality than the other.

So, in conclusion I apologize because my original answer was not clear enough. I didn’t mean to sound like I was saying there’s no difference between digital and analog audio signals, merely that with this adapter we do not feel confident enough (at least currently) to tell you that you should expect a higher quality of audio if this adapter is connected with USB alone, as opposed to w/ the AUX connection. We are continuing to look into how our dockBoss products work with digital audio systems in hopes of providing a more harmonious and universal solution in the future.

In the meantime, you can order one (or any of our other products) from us to try and return it within 60-days if it doesn’t work as you’d hoped.

Will the new dockboss + iPhone 5 kit work on a 2004 BMW iPod interface? Background information, I recently purchased a female iPod to aux connection which did not function at all with the car audio. My LCD displayed “No Support device or audio found etc”, It gaved me the same display when I directly connected an iPad. It only works when I directly connect my itouch device. Does this new enhance device finally solve the problem? Thank you!

    • cablejivezack says:

Thank you for your interest in our products. We aren’t aware of any issues between the dockBoss5 and any 2004 BMW systems specifically. However, some of our dockBoss products have had compatibility issues in the past with other 2004 BMW systems, so it’s possible that you could run into a compatibility issue here.

Regardless, you can return anything you order from us within 60-days from your original date of purchase, so you’re welcome to give it a try and return it if isn’t compatible for you.
